When someone is experiencing an overdose, they are unconscious and therefore completely unresponsive. When you try to wake them by shaking their shoulders or shouting to them, an unresponsive person will not respond by speaking to you, opening their eyes or moving in any way. This is different from being heavily under the influence of drugs where the person may be extremely drowsy, slurring their speech and unsteady in their movements.

When someone is experiencing an overdose, they can die because they cannot breathe due to drugs like opiates switching off vital signals to the lungs. Shallow breathing means their breaths can be reduced to 3-4 per minute instead of the usual 12-20 breaths. A person who has an overdose may stop breathing completely. The lack of oxygen in the body can lead to brain injury if not treated quickly.

Naloxone is a medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid-related overdose. Opioids are drugs like codeine, morphine, tramadol, fentanyl, heroin and methadone. A person may have multiple drugs in their body but reversing the effects of opioids with naloxone can be the difference between life and death. We should always suspect that opioids are involved since they are implicated in so many deaths (84% in Scotland). Naloxone buys a person time until an ambulance arrives, or they can be seen by a medical professional. Anyone in Scotland who is likely to find someone experiencing an overdose in their family, their community, their workplace or in a public place can request a naloxone kit and be trained in its use.

Naloxone Explained - HOW TO GET NALOXONE
Naloxone is mainly available via drug treatment services and pharmacies. This may differ slightly from area to area. Due to an amendment in Scotland, there are a number of services accessed by people who use drugs that may have naloxone available, such as homelessness services, family support, peer-led projects, criminal justice, social work and more. The Scottish Ambulance Service can also provide people with naloxone following their attendance at a near-fatal overdose. If you reside in Scotland, you can request a naloxone kit through the Click and Deliver service established through Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs. Naloxone is provided free of charge from all of these services.

ABOUT CAMPAIGN - About the campaign
We can prevent drug deaths. We just need to know how. This campaign raises public awareness of how to recognise and intervene when someone has a drug overdose. How to save a life. The campaign is backed by a new dedicated website stopthedeaths.com that tells people the signs of an overdose; what to do if you are in a position to help someone in an overdose and how to access a freely available medication, that reverses the effects of opioids like heroin, methadone and codeine. It’s called naloxone. Scotland faces a national public health emergency with drug overdose deaths rising for each of the last seven years to new record highs. Last year 1,339 people in Scotland died of a drugs overdose. These preventable deaths shame Scotland and represent a national tragedy. But we can all do something to help reduce the number of drug- related deaths. Don’t walk by. Early intervention when someone overdoses can be crucial. Recognise the signs. If someone is unresponsive and perhaps is pale or has blue lips, or there breathing may be shallow of they may make a noise like snoring; or they may have pinpoint pupils, you should suspect an overdose and dial 999 and follow the advice of the call handler.
